Why the SRC - Scrim Rig Concealment?

Concealment in the field can ultimately enable you to have an advantage over your target. The atypical 7 S's taught in the military (Shape, Shine, Shadow, Silhouette, Spacing, Sound, and Speed/Sudden Movement) help to give an individual soldier the grounding to be able to conceal themselves in their surrounding environment. Ghillie suits are fantastic pieces of kit, however in an assault / breacher role or close support, you'll likely not be donning one of those. There are currently some 'in the middle' grounds regarding kit that can be worn to help break up the shape of a person. Having attended many milsim events hosted by Stirling where you really are the master of your own destiny with all of the kit you carry into the field serving you for the entire event period (no showers, bunks or decent cooking facilities in sight), and to stay hidden means to stay alive, especially when operating as OpFor (Opposing Forces).

I found that the One Hundred Concepts Pack Scrim and Helmet Scrim did a fantastic job at keeping my back covered and my head covered both during the day and at night, but the vital piece that was missing was the front of my chest rig or plate carrier that was somewhat exposed, bare, a solid Ranger Green and a potential visual cue for any passing by Task Force. Looking at how scrim is implemented, I saw an opportunity for scrim to be used to help break up the silhouette and so I set to work looking at the front of my Spiritus Systems Mk4 chest rig and seeing what I could do that would help to reduce my visual signature.

Product details

The SRC - Scrim Rig Concealment is manufactured from 500d Cordua Nylon, a firm but flexible material used by other manufacturers when creating scrim products. In conjunction with the scrim I also used atypical elasticated shock cords for the tying / connection pieces. It's small enough to be wrapped up into a small pouch and so light weight that it literally adds nothing in weight to your kit. The shock cords can be used to either directly tie onto parts of the chest rig or used to hook into any velcro hook & loop patched area.

Weight: 14g

Material sourced from USA. Designed, cut and produced in the UK.

The SRC is currently available in the following colours;

Ranger Green, Multicam, Multicam Tropic, M81 Woodland (more colours to come).

ReUp Bandolier exterior in detail

The SRC (Scrim Rig Concealment) is manufactured using 500D Cordura Nylon material (Multicam variants are officially licensed Mulitcam materials and are NIR (Near Infra-Red) compliant).

Measurements

The SRC measures;

Height 10.5 cm

Width 1 9 cm

Thickness 2 mm

The purpose as stated is to reduce visual signature and preventing a solid block of colour (aka chest rig) to be spotted moving amongst a wooded environment for example. The latest scrim based jackets or patrol scrim utilised is designed so that the front of the jacket does not cover the front of the wearers body enabling them to lie down on the ground and not get it caught on anything (and thereby also reducing weight of item). You're more likely to be spotted when moving or when setting off from a position or stopping in a position. The human eye is good at catching short, sharp, violent moves and can pick out colour variations or solid blocks of colour if the pattern in an area does not match with that around it.

The SRC is designed to aid in reducing that solid block of colour. It's a simple and lightweight design and the shape and size of it is designed to so that it does not interfered with accessing any admin pouches or inserting / removing magazines. The elasticity of the SRC ensures that it provides good cover to the front of the rig whether you're running a slimline rig carrying only 3 mags or if you're running a larger setup with 6x mags and an admin pouch.

Using the shock cord you're able to attach the SRC to your rig either by directly tying on the shockcord to specific tabs in a semi-permanent way or by using the shockcord and tying both ends into a knot and securing it between the hook and loop of a velcro patch area of the rig, holding it tightly in place.

Due to the size and weight of the SRC, it can easily be transferred from one rig to another when required or can be stored in a small pouch if scrunched into a ball. It's light weight means you won't notice it in your pocket.

In addition to being able to be added to a rig it also measures correctly onto a typical triple mag pouch worn on the front of plate carriers and again helps to break up the visual signs of a solid block coloured plate carrier.

Thoughts and opinion

Initially born from a small and possibly niche corner of the market, I've been able to make a useful item of kit designed to help the wearer stay alive longer. It's not flashy and has one job but it doesn't break the bank, is sturdily made, is accessible to those in the UK easily and already comes in a variety of colours most military / airsofters would be after. Time will tell if the SRC does indeed decide to take off.
